Questions and Answers About St. Thomas Aquinas Society
We think you will want to know more about St. Thomas Aquinas Society (STAS). These are questions that have been asked many times. We hope you will enjoy this information.

How did St. Thomas Aquinas Society get started?
The founder, Therese Lorentz, woke up one morning in June of 1991 with the name St. Thomas Aquinas Society clearly in her mind and an understanding to start a prayer group. There was no vision as some people have thought. It was just the name: St. Thomas Aquinas Society clearly in her mind.
A few friends came together to pray in the presence of Jesus in Adoration at Corpus Christi Church. Their discernment was a two-fold focus of prayer and education because of St. Thomas Aquinas as patron.
How did the conferences get started?
In the beginning, events of other groups were supported and encouraged such as the “Come to the Banquet” Eucharistic Conference by the Mir Center, September 30-October 2, 1994. This conference was hosted at Corpus Christi Church and facilitated on site by original members of STAS.

When was the first STAS conference?
The first conference, The Real Presence Eucharistic Conference, was held at the Sheraton Hotel March 24-26, 1995. This hotel eventually became the Elegante Conference and Event Center.
The second major conference was in 1999, and then every year through 2021.
Were they always at the Sheraton?
There were 3 at the Sheraton: 1995 The Real Presence, 1999 Mystical Body of Christ and 2000 Divine Love.

Colorado Springs World Arena?
STAS moved to the Colorado Springs World Arena in 2001. It was more profitable for a hotel to host banquets and weddings.
There were 5 conferences at the World Arena: 2001 Triumph of the Two Hearts; 2002 Our Lady of Grace; 2003 Christ the King; 2004 The Holy Trinity; and 2005 Triumph of the Cross.

What about the Pikes Peak Center?
STAS moved over to the Pikes Peak Center (PPC) in 2006. The Colorado Springs World Arena management had purchased the Pikes Peak Center and said that they were renovating the PPC, that it would be perfect for us and would be ready in 2006.
There were 13 conferences: 2006 Jesus Christ: The Divine Mercy; 2007 God is Calling You By Name; 2008 The Healing Hand of God; 2009 The Risen Lord; 2011 Grace and Salvation; 2012 Be Not Afraid: 2013 Come, Lord Jesus; 2014 Blessed Be God; 2015 Jesus Christ Son of God; 2016 Jesus King of All Nations; 2017 Fatima and the Triumph; 2018 God the Father of Mercy/ Our Lady of Fatima; 2019 Christ the King of Mercy.

What about 2010?
We did one conference in Pueblo at the Shrine of St. Therese: Jesus Our Good Shepherd.
Why move to the Elegante (which is where we started these conferences when it was a Sheraton)?
The hotel where we hosted our speakers was sold and the Elegante was able to work with us.
In addition that same year, the PPC management had decided to put in metal detectors and divesting tables for screening. This would take place after our 2019 conference. It would have been difficult for our guests and also an additional major expense for STAS. It was decided to go back to the Elegante for both hosting our speakers and hosting our next conference, and a good room rate for those wanting to stay at the hotel.

How many conferences were held at the Elegante?
There were two: 2020 Family, Church & Nation and 2021 In the Love of the Trinity Our Thrice Holy God
STAS was notified on January 3, 2022 of the sale of the Elegante. This sale meant that our 25th major conference, In His Name, has been put on hold.
Are conferences expensive?
Yes, they were up in the range of $80,000 – $100,000 in more recent years because of the many speakers and related expenses.
Though people thought that every conference/event paid for itself, only about 3 or 4 conferences have met expenses and a small number of other events.

Why are the conferences and events free?
Because Therese woke up with the name in her mind and this was not her idea, she has always looked at STAS as belonging to God. She believes firmly that God would never turn anyone away for lack of funds.
Does STAS have a regular income?
STAS can rely on $546 per month which comes in regularly. Other income to fund events comes from donations and free will offerings. Income rarely covers the expenses of the individual events.
If everyone on our email list would just send in $10, this would provide a huge impact. It is hoped that someday there will be sufficient funds to move out of a home office.
